Is a 9kg heat pump tumble dryer the right size?

Drum capacity is the dry weight of cotton a tumble dryer can take, so a 9kg drum handles a 9kg wash without splitting it. AO's buying advice puts a family of three or four in the 7-8kg range and bigger households at 9kg or more, which makes this the size for families of four or five, homes that wash bedding every week and anyone with a 9kg washing machine.

The extra capacity over an 8kg heat pump tumble dryer also matters for a half-full drum. Clothes dry more evenly and with fewer creases when they have room to tumble, so a bigger drum with sensor drying copes well with small loads too. Choose a 10kg dryer only if you wash for a big household every day or want to dry a thick king-size duvet without squeezing it in.

How heat pump technology works

A heat pump tumble dryer has a small refrigeration circuit in its base. Warm air passes through the wet clothes and picks up moisture, then crosses a cold evaporator where that water condenses into the tank or down a drain. The same air is warmed again and sent back into the drum. Nothing is vented outside, and it runs much cooler than a condenser tumble dryer or vented tumble dryer, which is why heat pump technology uses less energy and why a cycle takes longer.

The power figures in our feed show the difference: the Haier I Pro Series 7 Plus lists 550W maximum and the Sangiorgio SDR9I 600W, where a condenser tumble dryer relies on a heating element. From 19 January 2027 only heat pump models can be sold new in Great Britain, after the government raised tumble dryer energy standards to a level vented, gas and condenser dryers can't meet. Machines you already own, second-hand sales and repairs aren't affected.

Three things stand out. Samsung has the most models in the range, and all but one carry the top energy rating for energy efficiency. Depth runs from 58.5cm on the Candy CSOEH9A2TE to 69cm on the LG EcoHybrid, so measure before you buy. And warranty cover varies far more than price suggests: from 1 year to 10 years on parts, or 20 years on the Samsung Series 8 motor. Bosch and Hisense also make 9kg heat pump tumble dryers, such as the Bosch Series 6 WQG24502GB and Hisense DH1Q902BW2 sold by UK shops, but neither is in our Amazon feed right now. For the most efficient machines in every size, browse our A++ heat pump tumble dryers.

Samsung Series 5+ DV90T5240AN/S1, one of the most reviewed 9kg heat pump tumble dryers
PIC: Samsung Series 5+ DV90T5240AN/S1 (Graphite) on Amazon - the most reviewed model on this page. A+++ rated with an annual energy consumption of 177kWh, 63dB, OptimalDry sensors, a 35 minute quick dry for 1kg and 5 years' cover when you register it.

Samsung's 9kg series explained

Because one brand dominates this size, it helps to know what each series adds. All of them are 60cm deep with OptimalDry sensors that read moisture and temperature and stop the cycle when the clothes are dry.

  • Series 5 (DV90CGC0A0AEEU): the simplest, A++ rated, with moisture sensors and a white finish.
  • Series 5+ (DV90T5240AN and AW): A+++, 63dB, SmartThings Wi-Fi, a 35 minute quick dry and a drain hose option. Graphite or white.
  • Series 6 (DV90T6240LN and LH): adds a drum light and hygiene care programme. Graphite or white.
  • Series 7 (DV90T6240LE): AI Control and wrinkle prevent for up to 180 minutes after the cycle.
  • Series 8 (DV90BB9445GB): a black finish, a digital inverter motor with a 20 year motor warranty and a Super Speed cycle that dries 5kg in 81 minutes.

For most homes the DV90T5240 is the sweet spot: A+++, a quoted noise level and the longest standard cover. Pay more for the Series 8 tumble dryer if speed matters. Colour choices are in our graphite heat pump tumble dryers and white heat pump tumble dryers.

What a year of drying costs

The old A+++ to D energy label gives an annual energy consumption based on 160 cotton cycles at full and partial load. Two 9kg dryers in our feed list it: the Samsung Series 5+ at 177kWh and the Sangiorgio SDR9I at 194kWh. From 1 October to 31 December 2026 the Ofgem price cap sets electricity at 26.32p per kWh on Direct Debit:

  • Samsung DV90T5240: 177kWh x 26.32p = about £47 a year, or 29p a cycle
  • Sangiorgio SDR9I: 194kWh x 26.32p = about £51 a year, or 32p a cycle
  • Drying more often: a family running five loads a week (260 a year) would pay about £76 a year

Real laundry costs rise with heavy cottons and fall with spin-dried, half-full loads, but the gap between these figures and an old condenser model's is what makes a heat pump pay. If the purchase price matters more than running costs, see our budget heat pump tumble dryers and the picks under £400 and under £500.

Reading the two energy labels

Several listings show two energy rating figures, such as A++ and D on the Haier X Series 5, or A+ and E on the Indesit. The old scale runs from A+++ to D, and nearly every heat pump dryer scores A+ or better; the newer A to G scale is stricter, so the same machine drops several letters. Nothing has changed except the test. Compare like with like, and use the kWh figure where the listing gives one. The label also shows a condensation efficiency class: class B, as on the Samsung DV90T5240AW, means most of the moisture ends up in the tank rather than in the room.

Haier I Pro Series 7 Plus quiet heat pump dryer
PIC: Haier I Pro Series 7 Plus HD90-A3Q979U1 (White) on Amazon - the quietest listing in our range at 59dB, A+++ rated, with the hOn app, a pillow-shaped drum, moisture sensors, a 3-in-1 filter and 10 years' parts cover.

Features worth paying for

Sensor drying

Moisture sensors end the drying programme when clothes reach the dryness you chose, which saves energy and stops over-drying. Samsung calls it OptimalDry, Teknix AI Sensor Dry; the Hoover offers four levels from ready to iron to extra dry, and the Candy Smart Pro four sensor dry options.

Quick and refresh programmes

A heat pump cycle is long, so a quick programme earns its place: 30 minutes on the Teknix and Indesit, 35 minutes for 1kg on the DV90T5240, and 5kg in 81 minutes on the Series 8. Steam on the Indesit and a refresh setting on Haier help relax creases in shirts that have only been worn once.

Wool and allergy care

A Woolmark approved wool cycle (Candy Smart Pro, Hotpoint C HD 93M) means jumpers can go in too, and the Teknix TK5HP9HS adds Allergy Care and a drying rack for trainers and delicates.

Teknix TKHP9HS titanium heat pump tumble dryer
PIC: Teknix TKHP9HS (Titanium) on Amazon - A++ rated with AI humidity sensors, a reverse acting drum, five air jets and a 30 minute quick dry. At 37kg it is light for the size, but it is 66cm deep.

Water tank or plumbed drain

A full 9kg load of laundry leaves a lot of water behind. Tanks sit at the top (Altimo), in a front drawer (Samsung) or in the door on Candy and Hoover, where you can see the level. If the tumble dryer is near a sink or washing machine waste, a plumbed connection saves emptying it; the Haier models and the LG EcoHybrid are set up for direct drainage.

Is a smart heat pump tumble dryer worth it?

Samsung uses SmartThings, the Haier group brands share the hOn app, and LG uses ThinQ. An app alert when the cycle ends and remote start are useful if the dryer is in a garage or utility room. Want smart features on a smaller budget? See Candy heat pump tumble dryers.

Hoover H-DRY 350 A+++ heat pump dryer
PIC: Hoover H-DRY 350 (White) on Amazon - A+++ rated and 59.6cm deep, with the hOn app, four dryness levels from ready to iron to extra dry, an AquaVision water tank in the door and 10 years' parts cover.

Warranty

Warranty cover is where 9kg models differ most. Haier, Hoover and Candy give 10 years on parts, Samsung 5 years when you register the Series 5+ and Series 6, and the Series 8 adds a 20 year motor warranty. Indesit, Beko and Hotpoint listings show 1 year, so check what the maker offers on registration.

Fitting a 9kg dryer

Nearly every freestanding tumble dryer here has a width of 59.5-60cm and a height of 84.5-85cm, so it slides under a standard worktop. None of our 9kg models is integrated: the built-in heat pump dryers we track are smaller, such as the Beko DTIKP81131W in our 8kg range. Depth is the figure to check, plus a few centimetres for the plug, hose and door. Weights run from 37kg on the Teknix TKHP9HS to 60kg on the bigger Samsung models, so plan a two-person lift for any appliance this size. Most freestanding 60cm models can sit on a front-loading washing machine with the maker's stacking kit, and a reversible door, as on Samsung, Haier and LG, lets you choose the side it opens. In a garage, check the manual's temperature range: heat pumps work less well in the cold. For a darker finish, browse our grey heat pump tumble dryers.

Care and safety

Clean the door filter after every load and the heat exchanger filter every few weeks; blocked filters make drying slower and use more energy. The London Fire Brigade advises cleaning the filter after each use, not leaving a tumble dryer running overnight or when you're out, and plugging it straight into a wall socket. Register a new appliance with the maker so you hear about recalls and activate the longer warranty cover above.

9kg heat pump tumble dryer FAQs

Is a 9kg tumble dryer big enough for a family of four?

Yes. It takes a full load from a 9kg washing machine and leaves room for towels and bedding. Families who wash every day, or have five or more people, may prefer a 10kg model.

Will a double duvet fit in a 9kg drum?

In most models, yes, but check the manual as some makers limit duvet sizes. Dry it on its own so it can move freely.

How long does a 9kg heat pump tumble dryer take?

The Sangiorgio SDR9I lists 158 minutes per cycle, which is typical for a full cotton load. Quick programmes cut that to 30-81 minutes for smaller loads.

Which is the quietest 9kg model here?

The Haier I Pro Series 7 Plus at 59 dB, then the Samsung DV90T5240 at 63 dB. The Smeg and Sangiorgio list 65 dB, about the level of a normal conversation.

Does a heat pump tumble dryer need a vent?

No. Water goes into a tank or down a drain hose, so you can install one anywhere with a socket and a suitable room temperature.

Are 9kg heat pump tumble dryers worth the extra cost?

For a busy household, yes. At around 29p a cycle on an A+++ model, the bills stay low however often you dry, and from January 2027 heat pump models will be the only new dryers on sale in Great Britain.
